The University of Arizona Poetry Center
The University of Arizona Poetry Center was established in 1960 by writer and editor Ruth Stephan "to maintain and cherish the spirit of poetry." A nationally renowned special collections library and archive, academic and community resource and sponsor of numerous outreach programs, including its distinguished Visiting Poets and Writers Reading Series, the Poetry Center has become one of the foremost literary arts centers in America.
The Poetry Center's Special Collections Library and Archive includes nearly 50,000 items, including poetry books, periodicals, reference works for writers, audio and video recordings, broadsides, photographs as well as rare and limited edition special books.
The Center offers a summer residency program for emerging writers. Outreach programs designed to expand and diversify audiences for contemporary poetry include community creative writing workshops and classes, writing workshops in Arizona State prisons, and readings and workshops in Southern Arizona schools. The Center sponsors annual student poetry contests including the bilingual Corrido Contest for Arizona high school students and provides research and academic support for students, scholars, teachers, poets, writers and readers of poetry.
An area of special emphasis within the College of Humanities, the Poetry Center enhances the University's regional and national reputation, and uniquely contributes to the intellectual and artistic life of the community.
