Distribution to Underserved Communities/Poulin Project
In collaboration with the New York State Council on the Arts' Literature Program, The DUC/Poulin Project distributes the work of hundreds of contemporary writers and poets published by New York State independent publishers, free-of-charge, to alternative libraries throughout the state. The project helps to support the independent publishers by introducing their books to a new and broader audience, while at the same time helping to diversify library collections. Each participating publisher donates a few titles to the DUC/Poulin Project, which then distributes them free-of-charge to alternative libraries such as youth and senior centers, juvenile and adult correctional facilities, and community libraries. In 2004, the DUC/Poulin Project distributed 3375 titles to approximately 70 different reading centers across the state of New York. Because the DUC/Poulin Project sends books to a variety of alternative libraries, the population who benefits from the project is broad and varied. The project places a special interest on serving typically underserved communities, such as youth and senior centers, juvenile and adult correctional facilities, and community libraries in disability learning centers, transitional housing, and rehabilitation centers. Therefore, our target audiences are at-risk-youths, seniors, occupants of correctional facilities, and individuals who make use of their local community centers.
