Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center
Community input makes Langston Hughes unique among public libraries. The Library Action Committee's Volunteer Board of Directors functions in an advisory capacity?this ongoing interaction means that all Corona-East Elmhurst residents have a voice in their library. Since its opening, the Committee and staff have ensured that the collections, programs and services reflect the needs and wishes of the community. Langston Hughes is the home of the Black Heritage Reference Center of Queens County, serving general readers, historians, scholars and researchers, students and educators with a comprehensive reference and circulating collection, totaling approximately 30,000 volumes of material written about and related to Black culture. The Black Heritage Reference Center also offers a cultural arts program, which includes literature/poetry readings and a monthly Open Mic Night.
